Successful data assimilation training marks milestone in $6.6M project

Last week, Department of Atmospheric Science Professor Peter Jan van Leeuwen hosted a training event on data assimilation with 70 participants from all over the US. This training represents an important part of the $6.6 million Data Assimilation Consortium to improve weather forecasts using enhanced numerical weather prediction systems. For the project, CSU partners with Howard University, University of Oklahoma, University of Maryland, Pennsylvania State University and University of Utah.

“There is a huge shortage of people with knowledge of data assimilation, and this shortage is only expected to grow,” said van Leeuwen. Training new people in the data assimilation field is part of the workforce development component of the project.
