Nicole Lovenduski Postdoctoral Research Fellow Department of Atmospheric Science Colorado State University The Southern Ocean plays a critical role in the global carbon cycle. It is believed that the Southern Ocean currently serves as a sink for atmospheric carbon dioxide, but the future sink strength of this region is uncertain. The dynamical processes controlling air-sea carbon dioxide exchange are likely sensitive to factors associated with future climate change, such as increased wind stress and freshwater forcing, and yet these sensitivities are not well understood. My research is focused on quantifying these sensitivities in order to predict the future behavior of this climatically important region. |
