Radar Meteorology

Research in this area includes the dynamical, microphysical, and electrical characteristics of individual convective cells, severe thunderstorms, and mesoscale convective systems in both the tropics and midlatitudes as well as winter storms in the midlatitudes. Studies involve data collected from surface, ship, aircraft, and space-based radars around the globe. Results often help develop technological improvements to doppler, polarimetric, and phased-array radar systems. Research also uses surface observations to validate radar precipitation analysis algorithms. Field projects include integration of radar into multi-instrument suites that collect observational weather data for experimental purposes.
