The Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University invites applications for a Research Associate to perform scientific tasks in support of the Collett group’s research on air emissions from oil and gas development.  Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator, the individual will assist in experiments to quantify emissions and downwind dispersion of air pollutants during various stages of new well development, including drilling, hydraulic fracturing (“fracking”), and flowback.  The individual will focus on field and laboratory measurements of volatile organic compounds emitted from well development.  The candidate must be able to communicate scientific and/or technical material clearly and effectively.  The candidate must be self-motivated, able to work independently and within a research group, and enjoy working in a chemical laboratory.  Opportunities to join measurement field campaigns are anticipated.

Minimum Requirements for this position include:

  1. A bachelor’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
  2. Experience working in a chemical laboratory
  3. Experience using one or more types of chromatography

Desired Qualifications for this position include:

  1. Master’s degree in Atmospheric Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field or 2+ years employment in a position with extensive laboratory experience
  2. Experience with the use of gas chromatography, especially familiarity with GC/MS-FID
  3. Experience with the analysis of volatile organic compounds, including EPA methods for air toxics and ozone precursors
  4. Experience with VOC canister data collection and handling
  5. Experience with QA/QC procedures including the determination of method detection limits, measurement precision, and accuracy
