Xinhua Shen has been a member of the Collett group since August 2005. She is currently focused on cloud chemistry measurements. In the cloud chemistry project she participates, samples of cloud water are collected with Caltech Active Strand Cloudwater Collectors and analyzed for pH, major inorganic ions concentrations, S(IV), Fe, Mn, Hydrogen peroxide, HCHO, organic acids and TOC. The data analysis results will enhance our understanding of the role that clouds play in aqueous phase sulfur oxidation. She also involves in the method development of cloudwater organosulfur compounds measurement.

During her M.S. study at Peking University, she was a member of the research group of Dr. Shaodong Xie at the Laboratory for Atmospheric Environmental Simulation (LAES). She participated in the sampling and sample analysis in several atmospheric research projects. Her thesis was focused on the vehicle emission factors.

Her personal interests include gardening and floral arrangement, reading (architecture, history, geography, and biography), fishing, travel, and hiking.
